Pushkar is a small holy town in Rajasthan located at about 135 km from Jaipur & 10 km from Ajmer. The Pushkar Lake situated here is considered to be one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India. Besides, being an important pilgrimage center for Hindus, Pushkar is also known for its annual Pushkar fair, which has a religious as well as traditional character. The festival is held for 5 days during the occasion of Karthik Purnima, which generally falls in the month of October & November every year. Thousands of devotees from all over the world throng to the lake to take a sacred dip into it, as the Hindus believe that a dip in the holy PushkarLake is very auspicious at this time.

On this auspicious occasion, the largest camel fair of India is held at Pushkar. Camels coming to the fair are decorated with great care & wear jewelry of silver & beads. The silver bells & bangles around their ankles make an interesting sound when they walk. An interesting feature of camels coming in the fair is piercing of their nose, which is considered a must ritual. In this fair mass trading of camel is done. Besides camels other cattle are also bought & sold. It's estimated that over 25,000 camels aretraded in the Pushkar fair, making it the largest camel fair of the world.

Other attractions of the Pushkar fair are various cultural & sports programs organized everyday during the fair. Camel races, dances, camel beauty contest & camel vs. men Tug of war contests make the festival more charming & colorful.
